Motivational Interviewing

This course is designed to introduce participants to the fundamental principles and practice of Motivational Interviewing (MI). MI is an evidence-based approach to bring about behavior change in clients or patients who have mixed-feelings and may be resistant about making adaptive changes. This course includes video lectures, video examples, and reading materials. The course is appropriate for helping professionals of all types including those who work in mental health and substance use (e.g. psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, case managers), health care settings (e.g., physicians, PAs, nurses), and family situations where change can benefit all involved (social workers, family counselors, friends, and family members).
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Define and recognize Motivational Interviewing (MI) approaches;
- Describe the style, spirit and fundamental strategies of MI; and
- Showcase how those can enhance efforts to accept behavioral change.
Participants who demonstrate knowledge of the learned materials will receive a certificate of completion eligible for 4-hours of professional development or continuing education credits with an accreditation organization.

This course is approved for professional development credits. OSU is the host and will report participant completion to the following issuing agencies for credit.
This course has been approved by Oklahoma State University’s College of Arts and Sciences Outreach, as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider, for educational credits. Motivational Interviewing is also certified as a micro-credential and digital badge. Participants who complete the required materials will earn a micro-credential digital badge to be used on professional portfolios.
