AREAS OF INTEREST

My research and teaching interests are in the investigation of next generation Information Centric Engineering (ICE) issues across various process domains (robotics, healthcare, space systems and cyber-learning). These include:

  • Design of Next Generation IoT / Cyber-Physical frameworks for robotic assembly
    • Investigation of agile assembly of micro devices involving robotic work cells and distributed cyber-physical resources.
    • Modeling of van der Waals forces and adhesive forces coming into play during micro assembly
    • Investigation of the roles of Extended Reality (VR/MR) environments as links between cyber and physical worlds
    • Methods to support design of 3D immersive digital twins within cyber-physical frameworks
    • Semantic frameworks to support cyber-physical interactions
  • Exploring HCC/HCI based VR/MR based approaches to support:

(a)  training of astronauts to work in cobot based contexts for the Moon Mission

(b) training of surgeons/residents and nurses in surgery and health care

  • Design of cyber-physical environments to support STEM+C Learning for autistic, K-12 and engineering students
  • Information Modeling methods and languages to facilitate collaboration and model driven cyber-physical activities
    • Representations of Information-rich process abstractions to design life cycle of cyber-physical collaboration in various domains

    • Dissertation Summary: A three phased integrated approach to Computer Aided Fixture Design was developed as a link between CAD and CAM activities; an information based functional model was proposed as the basis for the design and development of this approach. SYNERGESTIC ACTIVITIES

  • Virtual Learning Environments for helping autistic and minority students learn STEM

Pioneered the creation of intuitive 3D Virtual Reality based learning for helping engineering/computer science students learn basic and advanced concepts outside of the classroom; working with autism therapists and psychologists, created a new thrust on helping autistic students learn STEM through haptic and VR/MR based mediums.

  • Coordinator of the Soaring Eagle and MIME programs

Soaring Eagle is an outreach and mentoring program aimed at providing engineering workshops for K-12 students with an emphasis on encouraging minorities and women to STEM careers; it also provides Research experiences for school teachers with a goal of providing an early introduction to engineering for school students; Coordinator of the Minorities in Manufacturing Engineering (MIME) and Women in Computing initiatives, which offers Virtual Reality workshops to students (grades 4-12) with a focus on encouraging minority students (Women, African American, Native American, Hispanic, Children with Autism) towards STEM careers

  • Former Faculty Advisor, National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE): Interactions with NSBE student members and participation in national conferences; fosters encouragement of undergraduate minority students to research activities and graduate programs.
  • Research Experiences for Undergraduate Students:

Mentor STEM majors including minority students and students with physical and learning disabilities with a view towards encouraging them to graduate research careers in IT/virtual engineering; areas of research deals with information centric engineering (ICE) topics including creation of VR based simulation environments for various process domains. Mentees are exposed to research and industry project experiences including preparation for job/ internship interviews, preparation for GRE, help with applying for graduate school, polishing up resumes and helping initiate contact with industry.

  • Next Generation Training Environments and Frameworks in Smart Health
    • Collaborations with university and hospital partners to create next generation ultrafast networks for training orthopedic surgeons using Virtual Reality based environments. Milestone achieved in 2013 in design and implementation of first cyber physical environment for collaborative medical training of surgeons using Next Generation Internet principles.
    • Working with nurses and doctors to deal with covid pandemic by building 3D Virtual Reality/Mixed Reality training environments to help new nurses get trained to perform tests as well as treat patients in a safe and effective manner during this covid pandemic

  • US Ignite Project in Cyber Manufacturing (2015-2020)

Demonstrated the feasibility of next generation computer networks to (a) support cyber physical activities in collaborative manufacturing involving cyber-physical resources and supporting Virtual Reality/ haptic interfaces; these demonstrations were the first recorded demonstrations of cyber physical system design and implementation using Software Defined Networking principles for advanced manufacturing; recognized for this and other achievements by the IIE Technological Innovation award.
