Thermoluminescent Detector
Thermoluminescent Detectors (TLDs) measure absorbed dose from all types of ionizing radiation. However, they are less efficient at detecting neutrons and high-LET radiation than is CR-39 PNTD. Dose rate information can be obtained by averaging the total dose over the length of the exposure.
TLDs are typically made of a solid inorganic crystal such as calcium fluoride or lithium fluoride.
TLDs are used extensively throughout the world for personnel dosimetry. The detector is small enough to be easily carried on the person, and is read out by a dedicated reader.
