Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics

Undergraduate Studies
Microbiology majors at OSU study how microorganisms interact with their environment in order to harness their power for biotechnology. Here, you’ll work with living organisms that span the spectrum of microbial life. The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics partners with various scholar programs on campus, which provides support for college preparation, connects you to various resources and nurtures your individual academic development.

Microbiology/Cell and Molecular Biology, B.S.

We in the microbiology department strive to help our students get into the health field of their choice. There is no better preparation than a B.S. in Microbiology and Cell and Molecular Biology. Please note that for the microbiology degree there are placement requirements for specific courses.

Microbiology/Cell and Molecular Biology: Medical Laboratory Science, B.S.

The medical laboratory science degree option at Oklahoma State University is a hospital-based program. The student completes three years of academics at OSU followed by a one-year hospital internship at a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) approved clinical facility. Students may enter the medical laboratory science internship at the end of their junior year (3+1 program; minimum of 90 hours required) or with a B.S. degree (4+1 program), upon completion of the required courses for medical technology as outlined in the OSU undergraduate degree programs.

Microbiology/Cell and Molecular Biology: Pre-Medical Professional, B.S.

The faculty and staff in the microbiology department are committed to working with the health professions program to prepare students to apply to the medical school of their choice. One way that we help students is through OSU's 3+1 program to quicken the track to the OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa.

Minor in Microbiology

A minor in microbiology can be attained by taking 15 course credit hours designated MICR, including MICR 2123, MICR 2132, and MICR 3223. A minimum grade of "C" is required. Upper-division MICR courses (excluding MICR 3103) must add up to seven hours of course credit. Zero-ending courses are allowed to students, pending departmental approval, with no grade below "C".

I am originally from Mexico, and back at home, even to this day, there is an immense amount of information that maintains rural communities from properly caring about issues such as food safety, antibiotic resistance pathogens, and day to day infections. As I grew up in these communities, I became aware of the efforts the scientific community continues to do. I chose a career in microbiology due to the inspiration of these issues in my life, and my vision in aiding rural communities to further understand the impact of microbes in the world.
