The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics is committed to helping our students be competitive for undergraduate and graduate awards and scholarships. Below are some of the scholarships that our students can receive. Note: These are not the only scholarships that a student can apply for!
  • Arts and Sciences General Scholarship Competition

Individual awards vary in amount. Recipients will receive half of the award in the fall and half in the spring, pending continued full-time enrollment in the College of Arts & Sciences. Applicants are considered for all awards, but may receive no more than one award. Deadline for application is February 1.

  • Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

The  Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship was created by Congress to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater and to encourage excellence in the areas of science, engineering, mathematics and computer science. This scholarship is for current sophomores or juniors who have a high GPA and plan to attend graduate school in the STEM areas. This award is particularly for those students who have a strong record of undergraduate research in one of the STEM fields as demonstrated by ongoing and/or completed projects, reports, presentations, publications, etc.

  • Harry S. Truman Scholarship

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship was created by Congress for those who intend to pursue careers in public service, defined as employment in government at any level, uniformed services, public-interest organizations, nongovernmental research and/or educational organizations, public and private schools, and public service oriented non-profit organizations such as those whose primary purposes are to help needy or disadvantaged persons or to protect the environment. This scholarship is for current juniors who have a good GPA and plan to attend graduate school in one of the areas listed above.

  • KFC (Kidd-Ferrell-Conway) Endowed Scholarship in Microbiology

This scholarship was established in 2015 by Lauren Kidd, Jayme Ferrell and Sarah Sims, and joined later by Tyrrell and Sharri Conway, as a permanent source of enrichment for a full-time undergraduate microbiology student at Oklahoma State University with demonstrated financial need. The recipient is selected annually by the departmental scholarship committee. Note: This is a College of Arts and Sciences scholarship competition.

  • Lew Wentz Scholarships

The Lew Wentz Foundation and OSU provide support for the nationally recognized Wentz Scholarships for undergraduates. Microbiology majors have been remarkably competitive for these. There are three types of Wentz scholarships:

    • Lew Wentz Full Scholarship is for one academic year. This is a scholarship that requires a student research proposal with a letter of recommendation from a tenured/tenure track faculty member. Deadline for the scholarship is Feb 8.

    • Lew Wentz Semester Award is for one semester. All requirements are the same as the full scholarship. Deadline is Feb 8.

    • Wentz Leadership Award is awarded each year and is given to approximately 100 undergraduate student scholars for their academic work and activities in support of the campus and community.

For complete details about the Lew Wentz scholarships, visit the Wentz Scholarship homepage.

  • Morris K. and Steward L. Udall Scholarship

The Morris K. and Steward L. Udall Scholarship was created by Congress to honor Congressman Morris K. Udall — and later to include Stewart L. Udall — to award students with career aspirations related to the environment and sustainability. The award is also available to Native American and Alaska Native students who intend to pursue careers in native health care or tribal public health policy. This scholarship is for current sophomores or juniors who have a good GPA and plan to attend graduate school in an area listed above.

  • Niblack Research Scholarship

The Niblack Research Scholars (NRS) program provides support to Oklahoma State University undergraduates to conduct research in one of OSU's research laboratories under the general guidance of a member of the research faculty and with day-to-day mentoring by a graduate student. The Niblack scholar receives a stipend per semester for the academic year, plus for two summer months. The award winners must commit to working in a laboratory for the entire academic year plus two summer months. The graduate student mentor receives a research assistantship stipend to be received during the summer months. Microbiology majors are quite competitive for these scholarships. For more details, visit the Niblack Scholarship homepage.
