Dr. Grindstaff's Lab

Welcome to the Grindstaff Lab at Oklahoma State University! Our research incorporates concepts and approaches from physiology, behavioral ecology and evolutionary biology. We use this integrative approach to understand both the proximate mechanisms and the evolutionary consequences of life history trade-offs. Studies involve the integration of field and laboratory work to explore how ecological and physiological parameters act and interact to influence parent and offspring phenotypes.

Courses Taught

  • BIOL 5003: Graduate Orientation and Academic Development (Fall semesters)
  • BIOL 4283/5283: Endocrinology (Spring odd semesters)
  • BIOL/NREM 4464/5464: Ornithology (Spring even semesters)

Top Reasons to be a Grad Student Here

  • Collegial, enthusiastic faculty and students with shared interests in physiology, evolution, ecology, behavior, and environmental stress
  • Zoology Graduate Student Society (ZoGSS): center of intellectual and peer support
  • Seminar series and reading groups to foster intellectual development
  • Current students have received prestigious national research awards
  • Great resources for research
  • Local birding community

Note to Prospective Students

I am seeking self-motivated, curious undergraduate and graduate students with a desire to learn more about physiology and behavior. Most students in my lab currently conduct research with one of two bird species: Zebra Finches (captive population) or Eastern Bluebirds (field population).

How to apply

  1. First, read current research from the lab to be certain our interests are complementary
  2. Second, contact me by e-mail and send the following information:
    1. Research topics that excite you and why you would like to pursue graduate work in my lab at OSU.
    2. CV
    3. Prior experience with laboratory techniques, particularly physiological or molecular methods.
    4. Prior experience working with birds or physiological and behavioral research more generally.
Note: you don’t need to have prior experience with birds or any particular research techniques to be eligible for admission and to become an outstanding graduate student.
  3. Third, to apply for admission, review the department and graduate college requirements and submit the necessary materials.
