About us
The Oklahoma State University Center for the Humanities has been created to increase the visibility of humanities research on campus while also fostering the production of new interdisciplinary projects. Its mission is to provide an inclusive and collaborative environment to initiate new interdisciplinary research, foster dialogue, and engage communities.
The new Center for the Humanities, launched in 2022, builds on and expands the successful work of the Digital Humanities Initiative at OSU, which began in 2016 and remains an important area of focus. The Center for the Humanities is currently supported by the Office of the Dean, College of Arts and Sciences at Oklahoma State University, and functions in partnership with the OSU Library. In 2021, OSU supporter Dean Stringer made a gift that will create the Dean Stringer Endowed Chair in the Humanities, enabling the ongoing work of the Center for the Humanities. The Center for the Humanities organizes a wide range of events and programming. Each
semester panels and lecture series promote OSU researchers as well as bringing new ideas to campus and encouraging community
engagement. These include networking opportunities, meet & greets, and information
sessions about new research programs. An exciting new Research Group Fellowship program will foster new collaborative humanities scholarship in key, cutting edge areas of
the humanities. Several groups will be supported each year, leading to the creation
of publications, grants, and future research. The CH aims to serve as a communications funnel for all humanities activities on campus, facilitating better connections.
The Center also provides a structure for networking and advocacy by increasing connections between scholars, working with state and regional partners,
and demonstrating the contributions of the humanities for addressing social issues.
With the establishment of the Center for the Humanities, we look forward to providing
a designated space on campus to bring together disconnected constituencies, including
working with our colleagues in Interdisciplinary Programs to further expand the reach
and visibility of collaborative humanities work.
Center for the Humanities appoints first director
Dr. Jennifer Borland has been named the first director of Oklahoma State University’s Center for the Humanities.
CHCI Membership
OSU’s Humanities Initiative is a member of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI). CHCI is a global network of over 250 humanities centers, institutes, research libraries, and related organizations. The organization’s key mission is to support the future of the humanities by nurturing new forms and methods of global interdisciplinary collaboration. OSU’s membership to CHCI is intended to foster continued momentum around the humanities on our campus, providing resources and networking that will help us build an even stronger future for humanities research on our campus and in our communities.
