CAS Multimedia Studio FAQ
- What do I wear?
There are no clothing requirements in the studio. You are welcome to wear whatever you would traditionally lecture in. However, here are some considerations for the clothes you wear while recording:
- Shirts with fewer patterns work better for recording. Shirts that look busy with small stripes or plaids tend to look fuzzy when recorded.
- When recording with the lightboard, dark colors like black, deep navy or burgundy can get lost with the dark background. Also, any logo or text on your shirt will appear backward once the image is flipped.
- You will most likely be wearing a lapel microphone that clips on to your shirt. Button-up shirts, shirts with collars, and layered clothing like blazers or cardigans work well with the microphone. But it will clip on to any shirt, so you are not limited to the listed items.
- Some people like to record in the exact same outfit for every video to ensure the videos can be used any time of year for multiple years. We feel that changing up the outfit provides an opportunity to bring more instructor personality and authenticity to the course.
- What materials do I need to bring?
Being prepared for your recording will help the recording session run smoothly and reduce turnaround time for receiving your final video.
- Come prepared with a concept of how you want the video to look.
- Bring any photos, video, or other multimedia that you want to incorporate into the video. Place them on a flash drive or share through AirDrop.
- Your PowerPoint presentations will be recorded, so make sure they look the way you want them to before you arrive.
- Bring any notes with you that you would like to reference.
- If you would like to use the teleprompter, prepare your script in a Word document and email it to Jason Wallace (email@example.com) and Keith Mattix (firstname.lastname@example.org) prior to your arrival. You can also AirDrop the word document right before your session begins, but it will cut into your recording time a bit.
- Do I have to plan out the video before I record?
Having a plan is always a good idea, but it does not have to be complicated. It can be as simple as planning out a traditional lecture. If it is your first time in the studio, we highly recommend you contact us to schedule a pre-recording brainstorming session.
- Will I be involved in the video editing process?
You can be as involved as you’d like to be. In the absence of any specific instructions, the producers will create the video and send a draft to the instructor for viewing once before the video is posted. The instructor can list changes to be made, and then the final video will be posted in the instructor’s Canvas Studio repository within Canvas. (You have to click on the Studio icon within Canvas to activate your repository. We cannot post any videos until you complete this step.) You can provide instructions, preferences, or edits to the multimedia producers via phone, email, Word Doc, etc.
- Do I need to know how the equipment works?
Nope! We explain all of the technology before you begin your recording session. If you would like to practice or get familiar with any of the tech tools in the studio, please contact us.
- How long can I record?
Recording sessions are scheduled for one hour. You can block several hours at a time if you prefer longer sessions. We do not recommend recording longer than three hours in a day. It is difficult to maintain the same level of enthusiasm after a few hours, and the camera will capture your fatigue.

- Can I add a logo or watermark to the video?Sure! Our multimedia producers place a CAS logo on each video we produce through the CAS Multimedia Studio. If you would like your departmental logo, or logos from a sponsor, grant, or contract, we would be happy to add that logo to your video as well.
- How long does it take to get the video back?
For videos recorded during one-hour studio sessions, we can typically deliver a final video within 10 business days. Please discuss video timelines with our CAS instructional designer, Angel Muzik, and multimedia producer, Keith Mattix, to help prioritize your projects.
- How do I contact someone to discuss ideas?

- Is it difficult to record without an audience?
Recording your lectures without an audience takes practice, but we have some recommended strategies to make you as comfortable as possible in the studio:
- Let us know if you want someone in the room with you. Our multimedia producer and our student interns are always happy to sit in on recording sessions.
- Bring a student, a colleague, or a photo of someone you know to talk to (or at) while recording. (Keep in mind there is very limited space.)
- Create a script and use the teleprompter to get used to the process. You can always go off script later if you prefer.
- Practice makes perfect! Just get in and try it out. For most, talking to a camera becomes just as easy as talking to an audience after multiple sessions.
- Can you provide a brief overview of the process?
- You schedule a brainstorming/storyboarding session with the multimedia producer (optional, but highly encouraged) and then schedule a studio session. Note: If your course has not be approved by CAS Outreach, please consult with our instructional designer, Angel Muzik, before scheduling studio time.
- Prepare your lecture(s) and script(s) and gather any multimedia resources you’d like to use in the video.
- Attend your recording session and record!
- Review your video (approximately 7 days after recording) and provide feedback.
- Await your final video. It will be posted in your Canvas Studio repository. You have to click on the Studio icon within Canvas to activate your repository. We cannot post any videos until you complete this step.
- Complete the closed captioning process for your video, or insert any quizzes.
- Post the video to your course.
- Who does closed captioning?
Creating closed captioning is not part of the video editing processes. This is because there is often too much content jargon or technical vocabulary for our producers to accurately edit the auto-captioned script. The script produced by Canvas allows the user to edit the text to make corrections. The captioning, and therefore quality, of the video will be much more efficient if completed by the instructor.
The process itself takes little time to complete. Log into Canvas, click on the Studio icon along the left-hand side, and select the video you would like to caption. There are editing tabs underneath the video, and one is titled “closed captioning”. Select this tab, select the language you would like to caption with, and click submit. Typically, the captioning process is completed within 1-2 minutes, depending on how long the video is. You will receive an email once the process is finished. There will be an icon on the image that says “edit script and publish”. Select this icon to edit the script and click submit when finished. The video will then officially be captioned. Students will need to turn on the captioning on each video before watching to view the captions.
