  • Emeritus Math Faculty Award

Many professors have served the Department of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University until retirement or death. They worked hard to develop a supportive, dynamic environment in which both faculty and students could grow professionally. This award is named for them in recognition of their vitality and excellence.

The intent of the award is to recognize and encourage students who have the insight, interest, and dedication to pursue a career in mathematics. It is presented in the spring semester to outstanding undergraduates who have declared a major in mathematics.

  • The Mathematical Contest in Modeling
The Mathematical Contest in Modeling is an international college-level competition in applied mathematics in which teams of up to three students must analyze, clarify, and propose solutions to open-ended problems. Students spend an intense weekend in early February analyzing their problem and writing their solution paper. In recent years, more than 2,000 teams from throughout the world have participated. The faculty judging team for the MCM has included OSU's Professor Marvin Keener since its inception.

Solution papers in the MCM are sorted by the judges into four categories. The very small, select group of top papers are designated as Outstanding Achievement Winners. In 1992, OSU's team of Mike Oehrtman, Jennifer Wilken Williams, and Kevin Yoder were designated as Outstanding Achievement Winners, and a plaque in our trophy case honors their success.

  • William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Contest
The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition began in 1938 in honor of William Lowell Putnam, who profoundly believed in the value of team competition in regular college studies. Designated to stimulate a healthy rivalry in math studies between college and universities in the United States and Canada, the contest is administered by the MAA to full-time undergraduate students who have not yet received a college degree. The five highest ranking individuals in the Putnam Math Contest are designated "Putnam Fellows" by the MAA. Here at OSU, we are proud to have worked closely with three Putnam Fellows: Robert W. Gibson (1938), former OSU Math faculty member; Abraham Hillman (1939), former author of the Annual OSU High School Math Contest; and current Math faculty member, David Wright (1976).

The competition is open only to regularly enrolled undergraduates in colleges and universities of the United States and Canada who have not yet received a college degree. No individual may participate in the competition more than four times. A college or university with at least three registered entrants obtains a team rank through the positions achieved by three designated individual contestants.

Old problems, solutions, and results are available online.

The Bertholf Endowed Graduate Fellowship provides financial assistance to a student pursuing a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Mathematics at Oklahoma State. Dennis Bertholf joined OSU in 1968 after earning a Ph.D. in Abelian group theory from New Mexico State University. Dr. Bertholf supervised many graduate students while at OSU, including one Ph.D. and four Ed.D. students. He also served several terms as Associate Department Head, and occupied positions on the Faculty Council, the General Education Committee, the Academic Appeals Board, the O’Colly Advisory Board, and the Athletic Council. Dr. Bertholf contributed greatly to outreach efforts as well, running several Summer programs for high school students and serving as state director for the American High School Mathematics Exam. He retired in 2008.
