At the Greenwood School of Music, we highly value the involvement of non-music majors in our music program. Our ensembles are open to current OSU students, and we strive to ensure that rehearsals fit comfortably into their academic schedules. We offer an opportunity for everyone to explore any kind of musical style or period, in order to express their creativity.

Non-Music Major FAQ
- Do I have to audition for an ensemble if I'm not music major or minor?
Each ensemble has its own audition requirements. Check the Ensembles page to find out which require an audition.
- When are auditions?
Most auditions take place at the beginning of the fall semester, and a few ensembles also hold auditions at the beginning of the spring semester. Incoming and returning students will be notified via email when audition information is published.
- Can I receive credit for joining an ensemble?
Yes! Each ensemble is worth one credit hour per semester.
- Do I need to register for an ensemble?
Yes! Upon a successful audition or permission to join the ensemble, you can register by the add deadline.
- Can I rent an instrument from the Greenwood School of Music?
The Greenwood School of Music doesn't rent instruments but rather allows students to check out an instrument. Instrument check out is subject to the needs of ensembles and studios, and music majors take priority in checking out instruments.
- I'd like to learn how to play an instrument or take voice lessons... can I do that
at the Greenwood School of Music?
The GSM doesn't offer beginner lessons, however, you could take lessons through the Greenwood School of Music Preparatory Academy. GSM Prep offers offer a nurturing environment to people of all ages and believe that every person can learn to sing or play a musical instrument. - Can I use the GSM practice rooms?
Practice rooms and rehearsal halls are restricted to Greenwood School of Music students only.
- Are there concerts I can attend on campus?
The Greenwood School of Music offers many excellent concerts featuring student ensembles, soloists, faculty performers, and special guests artists. Most events are free, and events that aren't are extremely affordable! Visit our GSM Events page to plan your next outing to one our performances!
