Undergraduate Minors
Explore your musical interests through our variety of minors. Whether you're a music major or would like to incorporate music into your undergraduate career, we've got a minor for you!
Applied Music Minor
The applied music minor is a 15-17 credit-hour program that is designed for students who are dedicated to music performance. The minor emphasizes performance and ensemble participation while still providing opportunities for fundamental instruction in music theory and musicology. Students must maintain a 2.00 GPA in minor coursework with no grade below a C to complete the minor.
Composition & Theory Minor
The composition & theory minor is an 18 credit-hour program. This minor helps students gain a better understanding of how music is created, develop the skills to compose their own pieces, and deepen their knowledge of music theory.
Designed for students with interest in composing their own works or exploring the theoretical aspects of music, this minor provides students opportunities to study both foundational concepts and various progressions of music theory as well as instruction in composition. Students must earn a grade of C in all minor courses to complete the minor.
Students interested in this minor should contact Dr. Igor Karača for approval before declaring the minor.
Jazz Minor
The jazz minor requires 19 credit hours in jazz theory, jazz history, and jazz electives. With its 8 credit hours of electives, the jazz minor allows students to concentrate on what they choose. For example, a student can use electives to concentrate more on jazz theory. Or, a student can focus on performance through applied jazz lessons and jazz ensembles (such as big bands and combos). A student can also take jazz arranging and composition courses.
The jazz minor is open to all OSU undergraduate instrumentalists, regardless of major, based on audition.
Many jazz minor students and graduates perform regularly in the region with commercial, pop, rock, and jazz groups. Many OSU Music Education majors use the knowledge and experiences gained from the jazz minor curriculum for the benefit of their students. In addition to many local performances, OSU Jazz ensembles often perform at recording sessions and regional and national music conventions.
For more information about the jazz minor, please contact Dr. Tommy Poole.
