Dr. Rebecca Kaplan joins the history department and the Oklahoma Pandemic Center for Innovation and Excellence as one of the founding cohort of scholars. Most recently a fellow with the Science History Institute in Philadelphia, Dr. Kaplan earned a Ph.D. in the History of Health Sciences from the University of California, San Francisco, an M.S. in Epidemiology from the University of Texas Health Center in Houston, and B.S. in Biological Sciences, History and Policy from Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Kaplan’s research and teaching operate at intersections between the biological sciences, social sciences and humanities. She specializes in the history of animal disease and public health. Her major project is a book on brucellosis in the United States that employs cross disciplinary research to examine human management of environments and non-human animals in the context of controlling human health and disease. She has published widely and across scholarly outlets and media. Kaplan’s teaching is equally diverse, from K-12 instructors to medical students, and includes designing professional development workshops on global health issues for health professionals and graduate students.
