Sociology is the scientific study of society, focusing on the social lives of people, groups, and societies at all levels of human interaction. Sociologists study a broad array of social phenomena, ranging from the dynamics of social interaction to the composition and mechanics of entire societies. As a sociology major, you will explore questions such as:

  • In what ways does social structure influence individual action and how can collective action change social structure?
  • To what extent does an individual’s race, gender, or class influence their behaviors, how they think about themselves, how they think about others, or how the world interacts with them?
  • Why do group inequalities persist and what can be done to effectuate equity or equality across groups?

With a strong grounding in theoretical inquiry, the promotion of critical thinking, and the acceptance of diverse intellectual perspectives, Sociology improves our understanding of ourselves and others. You will learn to apply scientific reasoning and methodologies to study an array of social situations and institutions that make up society.
