The Department of Mathematics  offers an exciting environment for your collegiate studies with an award-winning, internationally renowned faculty. Small class sizes make it easy to interact with the faculty, and innovative courses such as the project-oriented Math Modeling and 3D printing courses enhance your learning experience. With multiple options, a degree in mathematics can prepare you for a variety of career paths and provide an excellent foundation for future study in graduate and professional programs. Math majors are among the top scorers on both the MCAT and LSAT. 


Program Highlights

 

Actuarial and Financial Mathematics - prepares you for an actuarial career with courses from mathematics, economics, finance, and statistics. Includes courses from finance and economics to prepare you for an actuarial career.  

Applied Mathematics - prepares you for the wide variety of jobs available in government, business, and industry. 

This track emphasizes breadth across science and engineering courses related to mathematics. 

Secondary Teaching Certification - prepares you for teaching math in high school as part of the exciting and innovative OSUTeach program. 

General Mathematics – prepares you for graduate study of mathematics as well as many careers.

Research and Opportunities

  • Work as a tutor in the Mathematics Learning Success Center (MLSC) or as a Learning Assistant for one of our entry-level math courses. 
  • Perform research under the direction of faculty members. 
  • Engage with your peers through Math Club, the Putnam Exam Team, the Actuarial Student Organization, the Association for Women in Mathematics. 

Student Internships

  • Working with our Career Service advisors, you have numerous opportunities for internships in a non-profit organization, a government office, or a private/public for profit business. The placement may be paid or unpaid, and/or count for academic credit.
