Instead of preparing you for a single occupation, American Studies coursework prepares you to think, explore and put knowledge into practice. Our graduates have pursued successful careers in a variety of fields, including publishing, public relations, law, public policy, community service and education.

American Studies examines

  • How national identity has been formed and transformed over time
  • How issues of race, class, gender, sexuality and embodiment have shaped the nation
  • How the United States affects and is affected by other nations in a global system
  • How culture impacts political and social relations and influences historical interpretation

In addition to a solid foundation in American history, politics, culture and social relations, American Studies  courses help you hone your research and reasoning skills.
