MS Applied Statistics Curriculum

This degree requires 32 hours of coursework. It consists of two courses in analytics, two courses in experimental data analysis, two courses in applied mathematical statistics, one course in computer programming with SAS and R, a creative component capstone course and three electives. Courses are offered online annually. Sequences of required courses below can be taken in any order or concurrently. See the course catalog for course descriptions.

Creative Component: The creative component course STAT 5002 must be taken in the final summer of study. The goals are to provide students with guided practical experience in analyzing data, and to fine tune their professional writing and presentation skills through the rigorous analysis of a data set. In the first part of the course, students will describe a data set or research project of interest, identify research objectives, identify potential solutions and propose a plan for assessing solutions. At the end of the course students will present findings to peers and submit a report.

Electives: Three 3-hour 5000 level or higher courses (excluding STAT 5013) must be taken to satisfy the 32-credit hour requirements. Any STAT course number 5033 or higher can be used as an elective. One or two non-STAT courses may be used as electives with committee approval. Some commonly offered STAT electives are below.

Plan of Study: Prior to enrollment in the 17th credit hour, all students must chose an advisor, committee members, and a plan of study at http://planofstudy.okstate.edu in consultation with the Graduate Coordinator. The instructor of record for STAT 5002 serves as the pre-approved advisor and chair of their graduate committee, and the Graduate Coordinator can provide pre-approved committee members. Some sample plans are below.

Admissions: It is necessary to have an undergraduate degree, not necessarily in mathematics or statistics, to begin a program of study towards the degree. It is expected that some students will be admitted to the program who have a bachelor's degree or master’s degree in some other field. Admitted students should have coursework that, at a minimum, is equivalent to the following courses at Oklahoma State University (see http://catalog.okstate.edu/courses/math/ and http://catalog.okstate.edu/courses/stat/ for descriptions):

MATH 2144 Calculus I

MATH 2153 Calculus II

MATH 2163 Calculus III

STAT 4013 Statistical Methods I

Transcripts, GRE scores, 2 letters of reference and CV are required. English Proficiency scores, such as TOEFL scores, are required for international applicants. Teaching assistantship are not generally available for this program.
