Dr. Sydney Burton

Visiting Assistant Professor of Flute

 

Originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, Dr. Sydney Burton recently earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Flute Performance from the University of Florida. Her doctoral research explored the intersections of flute performance and hypermobility in the fingers with guidance from occupational therapy professors and hand therapists. She holds a MM in Flute Performance from Oklahoma State University and a BM in Flute Performance from Slippery Rock University. Her primary teachers include Kristen Stoner, Erin Murphy, Cassandra Eisenreich, and Darlene Black. She also holds a BS in Middle Level Math Education from Slippery Rock University. 

 

Sydney has performed at both the regional and national levels, with appearances at National Flute Association conventions and as a substitute flutist with the Ocala Symphony Orchestra. She maintains a private studio in the Gainesville, Florida area and virtually with students from Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, and Florida. Her students have been accepted into competitive music programs around the country and have received top chair placements in PMEA and FMEA All-State ensembles. Sydney is a certified KinderFlute instructor and an active member of the National Flute Association, the Florida Flute Association, and the Oklahoma Flute Society.

 

This fall, Dr. Burton will join the Greenwood School of Music as the Visiting Assistant Professor of Flute.
