Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies Program
Identity has always been an important area of study, but now more than ever. Gender and sexuality are two forces that influence behavior, decisions and societal expectations. Learning to understand how experience is shaped by identity and also connected to social justice and equity allows students to communicate effectively and think critically about problems connected to gender and sexual identity.
Overview
Students minoring in Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies pursue research in the history of women, in theories of gender, in feminism, in the cultural construction of masculinity and in the cross-cultural intersections of race, class, nationality and sexuality. With courses from twelve different departments available to students, they can customize what classes they take to focus on the areas they are most passionate about.
Coursework
Required courses (six credit hours):
- GWST 2113: Transnational Women's Studies (S)
- or GWST 2123: Introduction to Gender Studies (DH)
- GWST 4113: Feminist Theories
- or GWST 4503: Theorizing Men and Masculinities
To complete the minor, students must complete six hours of courses focused on gender and women. We offer diverse GWST courses to fulfill these requirements, such as Women and Representation; LGBTQ Lives in the U.S.; Race and Reproduction; Gender & Violence, among many others. Other courses can come from a variety of departments including American studies, art, English, history, political science, psychology and sociology. Students must also take an additional three hours that complement gender and women's studies that could be anything from SOC Gender and Sociology to TH 3633: Diverse American Drama (DH).
