Applying to the Graduate Program
The OSU Graduate College recently initiated a new program which allows all required
application materials for both the Graduate College and the history department to
be submitted in one online location. Go to the Graduate College site and click Admissions.
The Graduate College requires that the applicant complete an Application for Admission
for which there is an application fee and the need to submit transcripts from previous
schools.
The Department of History requires:
-
Official transcripts from previous schools attended.
-
Curriculum vitae or resume.
- Three letters of recommendation. Applicants are responsible for requesting letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with their academic work and can assess the applicant’s likeliness to succeed in the History Graduate Program. References should comment on the applicant’s aptitude for teaching if application is being made for a teaching assistantship/associateship.
- Personal statement of intent. The statement should introduce the applicant, indicate the fields of study to be pursued, a potential project, long-term career objectives, and why the applicant would like to study in the Department of History at Oklahoma State University. The applicant should identify two to three faculty members with whom they could potentially work.
- Writing sample. Ordinarily a research paper completed in a history class or, for Ph.D. applicants, a chapter of their master's thesis.
Individuals wishing to apply for a teaching assistantship/associateship must also submit an application for employment. Our department's application deadline of January 15 applies only to those seeking an assistantship for the fall semester. Otherwise, we currently have a rolling admissions program.
