"Field camp at OSU was both a challenging and thrilling experience that any geologist with a future including field work would benefit from attending. The programme was as rigorous as it was fun, with teamwork and collaboration at the heart of every activity. Many field skills were taught and honed through lots of practise, from measuring and describing section to geologic interpretation, physical & digital map making to identifying good outcrops, and building stratigraphic sections to geophysics & hydrogeology, just to name a few. This course deepened my understanding of the duties to be performed in the field, adequately prepared me for them, and allowed many chances to become more adept at them through a variety of field areas and projects. But it wasn’t all work and no play! The course included a number of field trips on the weekends to explore some of Colorado’s famous landmarks, museums, mines, and fossil grounds. Anyone looking to become proficient in field geology and have a solid foundation of how to perform in the field both physically and mentally will find what they are looking for through this course. Be ready to really work hard but don’t forget to enjoy the ride! It truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity."

"While it can often be challenging, I found field camp to be really enjoyable. As a student during the pandemic, I was not able to get as much field experience as I had wanted; camp gave me an opportunity to gain familiarity with that aspect of geology. I enjoy hiking and field camp gives you more than enough of it to allow students to see really pretty parts of Colorado. While working on some of the assignments, I found that a lot of the information from my previous coursework really began to click together and made me more confident in my geologic knowledge. You also get to meet new people and it is nice to unplug from cellphones (to a degree) and gain more personal interactions with your classmates. I highly recommend attending!"

"I loved field camp! We got to see a lot of neat formations, fossilized tracks, and all kinds of other neat things out in the field while we were mapping. The weekend field trips were awesome, and my favorite part of a trip was going down into the Mollie Kathleen mine and riding the miners' air tram! Movie nights in the mess hall were a wild ride, too!"

"Field camp was a very unique experience that not only tests your knowledge of geology but challenges you physically as well. During camp I was able to apply all of the knowledge gained from past classes, which not only helped with the course but boosted my confidence as a geologist tremendously. Outside of the geology experience, I was also able to refine social and team skills when being put into teams of people I may or may not have ever worked with. This can be difficult at times, but knowing the individual strengths and weaknesses of your team is key in these situations. Overall, the field camp experience was definitely difficult at times, but the experience and memories that I had made along the way are invaluable to say the least.​"

"Going into field camp I was nervous, it was a new state, new people, and new professors. Truthfully, I didn’t want to go. When I got there, I thought it was going to be the longest five weeks of my life, that wasn’t the case. The experience I had at field camp was one to remember. I got to learn new techniques and actually apply them to the field. The hours were long and some days I was questioning my degree choice, but field camp taught me that it’s not about how well you do on paper. Field camp is about hard work and determination, it's whether or not you are going to hike that extra 10 feet to get a more accurate measurement. It’s about being able to work in a team and not letting your team down when there’s a project due after a long day of hiking. After I completed field camp, I was glad that I went. I came home with not only new geology skills, but also skills that will help me in the work field."

"Field camp was a very memorable experience. I had never really hiked before, so hiking all day was new and exciting. Initially I was annoyed with the lack of good cell reception, but I later became grateful because it forced me to socialize, and I made some great friends because of it. Dr. Spencer and Dr. Puckette were great picks for teaching this class, and I would go again if I could."

"Being a part of the Les Huston Geology Field Camp during the summer of 2022 helped me gain valuable geologic mapping skills I had not previously learned. This experience has allowed me to find internship opportunities based off of the experience I gained. My favorite part during this summer was the sunset hikes with the teacher’s assistant Jordon Massey. Even being a non-OSU student, I was treated with the utmost respect by the OSU students and faculty. It was truly one of the most fun summers I have ever had."

"I thoroughly enjoyed field camp as it was a test for me in many ways other than just geology. Early mornings, all-day hikes, and working with new people were some of the challenges that helped improve my character along with the experience the class promises to teach. The camp helped me find new friends and make better connections with those from Oklahoma State.
