Environmental Geoscience
Field data collection and interpretation for aspiring environmental geoscientists
Students who elect to pursue the environmental geoscience option at camp will complete
2-3 projects in the central Colorado region focused on collecting, processing, and
interpreting field data using modern geochemical and geospatial instrumentation. Students
test for heavy metals and other mining byproducts, radioactive elements, and other
potential environmental contaminants in water and soil before comparing those data
to historical measurements and making recommendations about potential future remedial
and monitoring actions. We work with local landowners who have very real problems,
giving students a glimpse into what a career in environmental geoscience would entail.
The region's rich (and sometimes controversial) history in resource exploration and
processing makes this an ideal location for seeing the connection between geology
and the environment in the real world!
