Interdisciplinary & individualized
Graduate Studies in the Department of English at Oklahoma State University is unique for its interdisciplinary range and individualized curricula. We offer graduate degrees in English with specializations in five areas: Creative Writing, Literature, Rhetoric and Writing Studies, Screen Studies, and Teaching English as a Second Language and Linguistics.

People

Our graduate students work with nationally and internationally recognized faculty. In all of our degree programs, students collaborate with their advisors to create individualized programs of study reflecting their own intellectual and creative interests while working towards their unique professional goals.

Areas of Study

Creative Writing

The Creative Writing program gives talented students of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction the opportunity to learn the art together in a supportive community with highly accomplished faculty.

Literature

The Literature Graduate Program in English begins with a course in the fundamentals of research and bibliography. Working closely with their advisory committee, students devise an individualized curriculum that reflects their own intellectual interests.

Rhetoric and Writing Studies

The Rhetoric and Writing Studies (RWS) program offers courses and hands-on experiences that ensure students gain depth and breadth of knowledge in areas such as professional writing, composition and rhetoric, and digital studies.

Screen Studies

The Screen Studies program incorporates film studies, television studies, and studies in new media. The program’s most distinctive feature is the special emphasis that we give to theoretical questions about the moving image—questions that do not in any way abandon historical reflection, but instead understand history and theory as necessarily related enterprises.

Teaching English as a Second Language & Linguistics

The TESOL & Linguistics program provides professional training in descriptive and applied linguistics, methods of teaching English as a second language, materials development, and second language testing. Students also participate in a supervised internship program in ESL and may focus on either Applied Linguistics or Sociolinguistics.

The Doel Reed Center in Taos is an educational site that extends Oklahoma State University's reach to culturally rich northern New Mexico. Located in the former home and studio of Doel Reed, a noted print-maker and founding chair of OSU's's art department, the Center is a hub for creativity in teaching, research and outreach. There are scholarships available to assist with the cost of taking a course.
