Graduate Certificate in Museum and Curatorial Studies

The Graduate Certificate Program in Museum and Curatorial Studies is coordinated by the Department of Art, Graphic Design and Art History in collaboration with the Department of History. This interdisciplinary program addresses a growing need, both regionally and nationally, for professionals who have museological and curatorial training and experience. The certificate program teaches the history, theory and practice of museology and provides students with hands-on curatorial and exhibition experience via coursework and internships. Students who complete the certificate will gain the practical skills and theoretical knowledge essential for further academic studies and careers in traditional museum settings as well as state and governmental agencies and other cultural institutions and venues.

Unlike other regional programs in museum studies, courses in this program are taught by core faculty in the Department of History and the Department of Art, Graphic Design and Art History and emphasizing hands-on experience. In addition to a required internship, students have the opportunity to plan and implement exhibitions at the OSU Museum of Art, Gardiner Gallery of Art and other OSU venues including the OSU Vertebrate Collections.

Currently, enrolled OSU graduate students are not required to submit transcripts or letters of recommendation for acceptance to this program. They must however submit an application and be accepted before they can register for program-specific classes. Prospective candidates for admission who are not currently enrolled in an OSU graduate program must submit a formal application, transcripts and two letters of recommendation. They must also have completed a B.A. degree in a related field (with a minimum of 18 credit hours completed in art history and/or history or related fields). Upon approval of the student’s application, the student must fill out a course of study form indicating what classes they have taken and are planning to take in order to fulfill the program requirements.

Students seeking a Certificate in Museum and Curatorial Studies must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their certificate coursework.
