Dr. John Tetnowski

Dr. John Tetnowski joined the Oklahoma State University faculty in the Fall of 2020 as the Jeanette Sias Endowed Chair in Communication Disorders and Sciences. Tetnowski received his Ph.D. from Florida State University and has held faculty positions at Portland State University and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette where he held the Ben Blanco Endowed Professorship in Communicative Disorders. His major areas of focus include fluency disorders (stuttering) and research designs. He has published over 80 manuscripts in these areas and has served as the primary mentor for 17 doctoral students and numerous master’s students.
Tetnowski holds clinical certification as a speech-language pathologist and is now the only Board Certified Fluency Specialist in the state of Oklahoma. He has established a local chapter of the National Stuttering Association (NSA) and has served as one of the co-founders of the Oklahoma Affiliates for Knowledge in Stuttering (OAKS). The NSA is a support group for people who stutter and their families, while OAKS is an association to promote knowledge among speech-language pathologists in the area of stuttering. Thus his influence reaches practicing clinicians through OAKS, people who stutter through the NSA, and the research community through his publications.
Tetnowski is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), a recipient of the Eminent Professor Award at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, the Louisiana nominee for the DiCarlo Award (for outstanding clinical contributions), and past winner of the National Stuttering Association’s Speech-Language Pathologist of the Year. He currently serves as the editor for ASHA’s Perspectives in Fluency and Fluency Disorders and has served on the board of directors for many professional and community organizations. This summer he is initiating the Cowboy Stuttering Camp for children who stutter and their families. Through outcome and efficacy measures gathered through this project — along with other work in the OSU Stuttering Research Lab — he has the goal of expanding evidence-based treatment services to rural and Native American Communities. He, his wife Jennifer, and his dog, Happy, are all glad to make their mark and serve the people of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University and people throughout the world who stutter.
