Modos de ver | Ways of Seeing

The Gardiner Gallery of Art at Oklahoma State University was pleased to present Modos de ver/Ways of Seeing, a group exhibition of internationally acclaimed contemporary Latin American art. Organized to coincide with Latin American and Hispanic Heritage month, Modos de ver/Ways of Seeing also celebrated the recent renovation of the Gardiner Gallery of Art, completed thanks to a generous gift from The Hearst Foundations.
Modos de ver/Ways of Seeing showcased the work of eight multigenerational artists
whose artworks speak to prehispanic and colonial heritage while referring to different
migrations in and from Latin America. Artists included Francheska Alcántara (Dominican,
b. Bronx, New York), Ana Buitrago (b. Bogotá, Colombia), Isabella Cruz-Chong (b. Austin,
Texas), Roberto Gil de Montes (b. Guadalajara, Mexico), Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (b. Mexico
City, Mexico), Sandra Monterroso (b. Guatemala City, Guatemala), Abigail Reyes (b.
San Salvadore, El Salvador), and Edra Soto (b. San Juan, Puerto Rico). Encompassing
a variety of mediums such as painting, sculpture, installation and video, the artworks
grappled with issues such as modernity, coloniality, patriarchy and gender. Many of
the artists in the exhibition gave voice to peripheral communities by presenting traditional
materials and techniques in combination with new technologies and methods of making,
inviting us to learn from the past in order to understand the present.
The exhibition was co-curated by Silvia Benedetti, a Venezuelan New York-based art
historian, curator and writer and Lindsay Aveilhé, Director of the Gardiner Gallery
with additional support from Curatorial Assistant Valentina Plata Martinez (M.A. Art
History) and Gallery Assistant Ruth Sanchez (B.A. Arts Administration).
The exhibition's reception included food and refreshment, music and a tabling event for student groups and local organizations to present relevant local and regional resources that pertain to Latin American interests and livelihoods.

Saturday, September 30, 2023, 2:00-5:00 p.m.
Artist Francheska Alcántara hosted a Domino Game Day with their handmade game boards
and dominoes made from Hispano cuaba soap. All attendees were invited to participate.
A limited number (30) of round-trip seats were available on a passenger van from OSU-Tulsa
on the day of the reception. Two 15-passenger vans departed from OSU-Tulsa at 12:45
p.m. and return from the Gardiner Gallery at 5:00 p.m.
Publication
The exhibition was accompanied by an illustrated catalogue available for free in limited edition at the gallery.
