Gary Shutt
B.S. ’74 – Journalism and Broadcasting
A native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Gary Shutt graduated with a journalism degree from Oklahoma State University in 1974. His education and experience at the O’Colly and in the OSU Sports Information Office led to opportunities throughout his professional career.
Gary’s jobs as a sportswriter at the Daily Ardmoreite and Tulsa World, as well as
his position as assistant sports information director at the University of Arkansas,
opened the door to a position at Southwestern Bell Telephone (now AT&T). During a
nearly 24-year career at Bell, he held various public relations positions, including
speechwriter for the chairman.
Gary’s OSU ties brought him back to the Stillwater campus in 2005 as director of communications
for Oklahoma State. Shutt oversaw the university’s media relations, internal communications,
website, the creation and growth of social media and video platforms, and communications
support to the university president.
Gary retired from his full-time OSU position in 2018, but he continued to support
former president Burns Hargis and taught crisis communications and sports media classes
in the School of Media and Strategic Communications until 2021.
Shutt lives in Edmond, Oklahoma, with his wife, Sheryl. The couple has two sons, Casey
and Tristan, a daughter-in-law, Sarah, and three grandchildren, Cora, Henry and Oliver.
