Dr. Michael Tallman

Dr. Michael Tallman

Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics

Michael Tallman received his B.Sc. and M.A. in mathematics from the University of Northern Colorado and his Ph.D. in mathematics education from Arizona State University. He has experience teaching a range of mathematics courses at the secondary and post-secondary levels. His research focuses on assessments of students’ learning, designing multimedia instructional resources for calculus, and developing teachers’ content knowledge.

He is engaged in a funded research project to develop instructional videos for single-variable calculus courses. His research team adapts ideas from the fields of information systems and organizational studies to investigate how students make sense of and learn from calculus video resources. Through analysis of data obtained from multiple sources, including clinical interviews and eye-tracking data, his investigation of various methods of structuring the video-watching experience contributes to educators' understanding of how to design and implement dynamic instructional media into their curriculum. His research aspires to improve the quality of STEM education and, ultimately, contribute to the development of a globally competitive STEM workforce.
