Mission Statement

The Oklahoma State University Department of Theatre cultivates creators, artists, storytellers, and creative leaders to engage, inspire, and serve their communities through the transformative power of the theatrical arts. As part of a land-grant university, we believe the theatrical arts are both an art form and public resource that expands imagination, fosters dialogue, and connects people across experiences and perspectives.

Through innovative teaching, creative activity, research, and community engagement, we create transformative educational and artistic experiences that encourage discovery, collaboration, and leadership. Grounded in rigorous classroom study, collaborative training, and experiential learning, we prepare students to become innovative artists, ethical leaders, and engaged citizens who contribute to the cultural vitality of Oklahoma and beyond.

Core Values:

  1. Creativity and Artistic Excellence: We pursue excellence by engaging in artistic practice, innovation, imagination, and craftsmanship. We support taking creative risks, investigating, experimenting, and continuous growth as artists.
  2. Discovery and Innovation: We view theatre arts as an ongoing process of exploration and discovery. Through experiential learning in performance, design, technology, scholarship, and creative work, we encourage students to pursue their passions, expand their perspectives, and engage in meaningful inquiry. By fostering research, scholarship, and creative activity, we seek to generate new knowledge and contribute to the advancement of the theatrical arts.
  3. Collaboration and Connection: Theatre arts are fundamentally collaborative. By fostering respect, empathy, and shared objectives, we create meaningful artistic experiences and strengthen bonds among individuals, audiences, and communities.
  4. Leadership and Professional Growth: We nurture artists and leaders who exhibit integrity, accountability, adaptability, and initiative. By providing experiential learning and professional development, we enable students to confidently lead in the arts and other fields.
  5. Community Engagement and Service: As a Land Grant University, we are dedicated to enhancing Oklahoma's cultural landscape through outreach, partnerships, and public engagement. We utilize storytelling and performances to foster dialogue, build stronger communities, and promote positive social impact.

Vision Statement:

We envision a theatre program where creators become leaders, artists become innovators, and storytellers become catalysts for connection and change. Through artistic excellence, creative discovery, and meaningful community engagement, we empower students to shape the future of the performing arts while enriching the cultural, educational, and civic life of Oklahoma and beyond.
