Major in Philosophy

Rediscover the sense of wonder about life, morality and meaning
The Department of Philosophy offers students the skills to critically engage with life's fundamental questions. As a Philosophy major/minor, you will enjoy small, discussion oriented classes and have the opportunity to engage with other philosophers through the Ethics Bowl and Friends of the Forms. The department offers a large variety of classes including: Ancient Philosophy, AI ethics, Happiness and Well-being, Philosophy of Religion, Feminist Philosophy, Philosophy of Dreams, Ethical Theory, Philosophy of Race, Philosophy of Psychology, Biomedical Ethics, Feminist Philosophy, and Philosophy of Science.

Philosophy Major/Options

Philosophy, B.A.

This degree prepare's students for most graduate level degrees focusing in analytical writing.

Ethics and Business Essentials, B.A. Option

The combination of both ethics and business will help students capitalize on ethical understandings in dealing with businesses and provide a foundation in analytical thinking and writing.

Ethics and Public Policy, B.A. Option

Combining Philosophy, Sociology and Political Science, students will learn ethical theories and how they have been practiced over the centuries as well as read prolific writing from both theorists and activists.

Areas of Specialization

B.A. in Philosophy (Pre-Law) 3+3 Option

The Department of Philosophy offers a 3+3 option. Through a focus on relevant classes in the first three years of a student's undergraduate degree, we offer an opportunity to begin law school before the completion of their bachelor's degree.

B.A. in Philosophy (Pre-Ministry)

The Pre-Ministry specialization incorporates a variety of religion and philosophy of religion classes to help students prepare for ministry. Our faculty are some of the leading experts in their fields.

Philosophy Minors

The combination of both ethics and business will help students capitalize on ethical understandings in dealing with businesses and provide a foundation in analytical thinking and writing.

Advising

A full-time advisor is available for personal assistance. Each CAS freshman also starts their OSU career with a freshman advisor.
