
Mario Borunda
Faculty Fellow for Faculty Mentoring and Graduate Excellence
Mario Borunda serves as the Puterbaugh Foundation Faculty Fellow for Faculty & Graduate Excellence, focusing on our faculty mentoring initiatives and reviewing graduate student support structures in our College. He started at Oklahoma State University in 2012 as a Faculty member in Physics and served as Associate Dean for Academic Community Excellence from 2023 to 2025.
Borunda is currently a Professor of Physics and Co-Director of the Physics Summer REU program. He earned his bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2003, followed by a Ph.D. in Physics from Texas A&M University in 2008. From 2009 to 2012, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Associate at Harvard University. Borunda is an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society and has been nationally recognized for his leadership on numerous diversity initiatives.
