The Bachelor of Science in Music Industry degree serves students interested in careers in music production, songwriting, live entertainment, and music entrepreneurship. Students take courses in musicianship, music technology, music entrepreneurship, as well as classes related to general business.


B.S. in Music Industry Curriculum

Courses have been developed specifically for the B.S. in Music Industry to prepare students for careers related to the music industry, which may include music producer, songwriter, video game composer, sound designer, playback engineer, recording engineer, studio manager, mixing engineer, mastering engineer, A & R (artists and repertoire), artist representative, booking agent, concert promoter, tour manager, tour coordinator, concert hall manager, stage manager, licensing representative, live sound engineer, and light technician.

 

Music Lessons and Auditions 

In addition to the newly added instruction in electric guitar, electric bass, and drum set, music industry students can study voice, piano, woodwinds, brass, or percussion. Music scholarships are available to incoming students in the music industry degree program based on the initial audition. Even if students do not apply for scholarships, applicants at all levels of ability must audition as a part of the required admission process for acceptance as a major in the Michael and Anne Greenwood School of Music.

 

Spears School of Business Accelerated MBA Program

Music Industry majors also have the opportunity to start an MBA program their senior year, earning a Master's in Business Administration with only one extra year!The Spears School of Business Accelerated MBA program allows students to finish a master's degree in Business Administration within a year of completing a bachelor's degree, unlocking future opportunities for management and eliminating the challenge of going back to school after launching into a career.

  

Student Opportunities at OSU

Poke U Records, a student-run record label at Oklahoma State University, allows music industry majors to gain valuable recording industry experience. The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts at Oklahoma State University serves as one of the premier cultural institutions of Oklahoma, providing music industry students with opportunities to work with top symphonies, institutions, artists, and traveling musical groups.

 

The college town of Stillwater offers a welcoming setting for students interested in performing or showcasing their song-writing abilities. The capstone experience for music industry students is an internship, allowing students to gain real-world work experience in the music business.
