Mark Gulley, Ph.D.
2024 Distinguished Alumni
M.S. Physics '87
After earning his bachelor’s degree in physics from Hendrix College in Arkansas, Mark Gulley attended Oklahoma State University from 1985 to 1987, where he received his master's in physics.
Mark then moved to Roswell, New Mexico, where he spent several years teaching physics
at New Mexico Military Institute. It wasn’t long before Mark went back to school himself,
receiving his Ph.D. in physics from the University of New Mexico in 1997.
While at UNM, Mark was introduced to the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE)
at Los Alamos National Laboratory. LANSCE is a half mile-long linear particle accelerator
that currently serves five separate, unique facilities conducting experimental activities
in a range of areas.
It was at LANSCE that Mark conducted his dissertation research. He stuck around for
his postdoctoral work at LANSCE before becoming a staff member in the Accelerator
Operations & Technology Division (AOT). He continues to serve in the AOT Division
as deputy division leader, overseeing the operations and maintenance of the LANSCE
accelerator.
Mark is active in the Department of Energy’s Accelerator Safety Community of Practice,
which — among other activities — organizes the DOE’s annual Accelerator Safety Workshop.
Mark and his wife, Mickey, have been married for 32 years. They have two sons, William
and Stephen, and a daughter, JoEve, all of whom are in their twenties.
