Micropaleontology Lab
Our Micropaleontology Lab
is committed to enhancing our students' success by engaging students in hands-on lab experiences and mentorship. We teach our students how important micropaleontology is in reconstructing Earth's history, about our origins, how Earth, plants and animals changed over time, and how our world with humans came to be.
Our students
work with high-quality equipment and study organisms so small that they can only be observed through a microscope. Micropaleontology involves successive ranges of sizes of microscopic fossils down to organisms that must be magnified hundreds of times to be viewed. The traditional techniques of Micropaleontology have seen significant advances in the past decade and is a major field of research in the geological sciences. A common challenge in the scientific field is the identification of fossil grains, but with high-resolution imaging, our research has been greatly enhanced.
We teach our students the many ways in which microfossils may be extracted from their matrix and prepared for studying, along with field sampling procedures, laboratory techniques, extraction of microfossils and general methods of washing, sieving and specialist methods of separation.
