The world, and Oklahoma specifically, needs more outstanding teachers. Many of those studying STEM fields have some interest in teaching, and yet STEM fields have the greatest shortage of secondary education teachers. In 2014, OSU became the first and only UTeach program in Oklahoma. UTeach was created to attract those already majoring in STEM fields and give them the preparation they need to become teachers while promoting high retention rates.
OSUTeach is a secondary mathematics and science teacher preparation program. It is a collaboration between the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education and Human Sciences where students receive their degree in a STEM major as well as full teaching certification. After graduation, students can teach in a secondary education classroom, pursue a graduate degree or even obtain a job in their content field.
Students in the OSUTeach program can choose from six degree options to complete. They will earn a B.S. in their chosen degree and also complete all the requirements for secondary teacher certification.
If you are considering OSUTeach as an option, enroll in SMED 1012: Inquiry Approaches to Teaching, Step 1. This course will help students see if teaching is the right path for them by giving them an introduction to teaching, lesson planning and classroom management. Students will even get to observe a real classroom and teach an actual class.
