Africana Studies Minor
Our world is a global community, and it is more important than ever before to learn about the unique experiences of those with differing backgrounds from our own. By approaching Africana Studies from an interdisciplinary perspective, students gain valuable insight into the cultures and traditions associated with the African Diaspora while also further developing their critical thinking, research and writing abilities.
Overview
The Africana Studies minor is designed for students who are interested in gaining knowledge and information related to Africa and its Diaspora. The minor focuses on all aspects of the social, political, economic, religious, and cultural developments and changes that are related to the African Diaspora, particularly as it relates to North America.
Coursework
Required Courses (3 credit hours):
- AFAM 1113: Introduction to Africana Studies (DH)
To complete the minor, students must select 15 additional hours from courses like Black Popular Culture, African American History, or Race, Politics and Sports. Courses are available in a variety of CAS departments including American Studies, English, history, geography, philosophy, political science, psychology and sociology.

Center for Africana Studies
The Center for Africana Studies housed in the College of Arts and Sciences at Oklahoma State University is an academically-oriented institution committed to an interdisciplinary approach to the advancement of research, teaching and the general promotion of knowledge of the Diaspora of Africa. The Center for Africana Studies is located on the first floor of Life Sciences East in room 112.
