Applying to the Graduate Program

Our Graduate College recently initiated a new program which allows all required application materials for both the Graduate College and the History Department to be submitted in one on-line location. To access that site, go to and click "Admissions."

The Graduate College requires that the applicant complete an Application for Admission for which there is an application fee and the need to submit transcripts from previous schools.

The Department of History requires:

  1. Three letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with the applicant's academic work and who can comment on the applicant's aptitude for teaching if he/she is interested in applying for an assistantship.
  2. A statement of intent indicating the fields of study to be pursued and long-term career objectives
  3. A recent sample of the applicant's writing, ordinarily a research paper completed in a history class or, for Ph.D. applicants, a chapter of their master's thesis
  4. The results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (GRE requirement is waived for admission for Spring and Fall 2021).

Individuals wishing to apply for a teaching assistantship/associateship must also submit an application for employment. Our department's application deadline of February 1st applies only to those seeking an assistantship for the fall semester. Otherwise, we currently have a rolling admissions program.

Information concerning the dates and locations of the Graduate Records Examinations can be obtained from the testing office of the applicant's current university or college, by writing to GRE, Box 955, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ 08541, or by visiting the GRE web site at The institution code for OSU is 6546 and please be sure to use our department code, 2799.
