Applying to the Graduate Program


Our Graduate College recently initiated a new program which allows all required application materials for both the Graduate College and the History Department to be submitted in one on-line location. To access that site, go to and click "Admissions."

The Graduate College requires that the applicant complete an Application for Admission for which there is an application fee and the need to submit transcripts from previous schools.

The Department of History requires:

  1. Three letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with the applicant's academic work and who can comment on the applicant's aptitude for teaching if they are interested in applying for an assistantship.
  2. A personal statement of intent that introduces yourself; indicates the fields of study to be pursued, a potential project, long-term career objectives; and why you would like to study in the Department of History at Oklahoma State University. Applicants should identify 2-3 faculty members with whom they could potentially work.
  3. A recent sample of the applicant's writing, ordinarily a research paper completed in a history class or, for Ph.D. applicants, a chapter of their master's thesis.

 Individuals wishing to apply for a teaching assistantship/associateship must also submit an application for employment. Our department's application deadline of January 15 applies only to those seeking an assistantship for the fall semester. Otherwise, we currently have a rolling admissions program.
