Gender and Women's Studies to Co-Host Human Rights Celebration |

Sept. 23, 2009 To commemorate four decades of struggling for human rights, a historical exhibit of “40 Years after Stonewall: The Gay Movement in America” will be on display Oct. 5 to Oct. 9 in the Peggy V. Helmerich Browsing Room of the Edmon Low Library.
Made possible in part by a grant from the Oklahoma Humanities Council, the week-long event begins with a panel discussion at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, in Room 270 of the Student Union. Humanities scholars will discuss the origins and impact of this exhibit of images and artifacts from gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender movements since the 1960s. Speakers will include Jean-Nickolaus Tretter (photo at right), the curator and founder of the Tretter Collection in Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies, Laura Belmonte, associate professor of history and director of American Studies, and Angie Piehl, assistant professor of art. |

Social Sciences Lecture: Obama's Foreign Policy is Topic Sept. 30 |

Sept. 25, 2009 James Lindsay, a leading authority on the American foreign policymaking process, will lecture on “The Transformation: Barack Obama and the Remaking of American Foreign Policy” at 7 p.m. on Sept. 30 at the Student Union Theater.
Lindsay recently joined the staff of the Council on Foreign Relations where he directs the studies program. A former staff member of the Clinton Administration's National Security Council, he also served as a Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies Program at the Brookings Institution. Prior to his recent appointment at the Council on Foreign Relations, he was the Tom Slick Chair for International Affairs and inaugural director of the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law at the University of Texas’ LBJ School of Public Affairs. Lindsay’s research and policy interests have centered on the process and politics of American foreign policy. His contributions to both the academic and policy arena have been substantial, says James M. Scott, head of the political science department at OSU. |

Psychology Department to Co-Host Regional Conference |

Sept. 18, 2009 The third annual meeting of the Oklahoma Network for the Teaching of Psychology takes place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25 at the Renaissance Hotel and Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City. The conference, hosted by the OSU Department of Psychology and School of Applied Health and Educational Psychology, is open to teachers and students from high schools, two-year and four-year colleges, and universities across the nation. Each year approximately 75,000 students in the United States graduate with a degree in psychology, says conference co-director Shelia Kennison, an associate psychology professor at OSU. “At OSU, psychology is one of our most popular majors so the aim of the conference is to bring together individuals involved in the teaching of psychology in Oklahoma at all educational levels. This is the only conference in the state where faculty can meet to share resources and information for the purpose of improving the quality of teaching of psychology.” |
