Distinguished Ukrainian Musician to Play Free Concert at OSU

Nov. 18, 2009

One of the Ukraine’s most distinguished musicians, Leonid Hrabovsky, will participate in a free concert of his own music performed by faculty of the OSU Department of Music at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, in the Seretean Center Concert Hall.

Born in 1935 in Ukraine, Hrabovsky graduated from Kiev Conservatory in 1964. He taught composition and theory at Kiev Conservatory and later moved to Moscow to become musicological critic for Sovetskaya Muzyka magazine.

“Professor Hrabovsky was one of the first avant garde composers in the Soviet Union at a time when the musical avant garde was politically taboo,” said Keith Tribble, coordinator of Hrabovksy’s visit and a professor of Russian studies at OSU.

Bus Tour Introduces New A&S Faculty to the State

Nov. 13, 2009

Eleven new professors in the College of Arts and Sciences at OSU spent Nov. 7 on the road getting to know the state and its people a little better.

The group traveled from Stillwater to Bartlesville to Tulsa with a few stops on country back roads. At each stop, they caught a glimpse of the state’s geography, culture and heritage.

The day kicked off with a visit to Bartlesville where the group toured a National Historic Landmark, the Price Tower that was completed in 1956 by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. “It’s hard to imagine Bartlesville without this great building,” said Bartlesville resident Joe Williams, a 1967 OSU journalism graduate. “It’s a piece of art and we’re very lucky to have it here.”
