American Studies Minor

Courses in American Studies examine the history, culture, and society of the United States from a multidisciplinary, multicultural, and transnational perspective. We use the past to inform the present and emphasize issues of identity, social power, and social responsibility, with a particular focus on the importance of race, class, gender, and sexuality in American life. By encouraging students to take coursework in a variety of fields—from political science, geography, and sociology to literature, history, art history, education, and media studies—the American Studies minor fosters intellectual agility and enables students to bring a fresh perspective to the key questions of their disciplines.

In addition to providing a well-rounded liberal arts education, American Studies courses help students strengthen their skills in critical thinking, research, analysis, and communication. Our alumni have gone on to pursue graduate education and employment in a variety of fields, including business, marketing, non-profit management, education, social work, journalism, and the law. Please join us for some of the most stimulating coursework you will find at OSU.
